In the First District of the State of Maryland, incumbent Andy Harris has been re-elected to the United States House of Representatives. He is the only member of Hungarian origin the U.S. Congress, part of the Republican majority.
Harris received 67% of the votes as opposed to 29% cast for the Democratic candidate, John LaFerla whose name was written and not printed on the ballot.
The original Democratic nominee to challenge Republican Rep. Andy Harris in the First Congressional District, Wendy Rosen withdrew from the race this September amid allegations that she had voted in elections in both Maryland and Florida in 2006 and 2008.
Andy Harris's father, Zoltán Harris, was born in Miskolc, northeastern Hungary in 1911 and emigrated to the United States in 1950; his mother, Irene, was born in Poland. Andy Harris was born in the United states in 1957.
