The President of the Republic, Tamás Sulyok has convened the inaugural session of the new National Assembly for 10 a.m. on May 9, his office said on Tuesday.
The President's office statement highlighted that in line with the constitution, the inaugural session has been convened by the President of the Republic within thirty days following the general election.
During talks initiated by President Sulyok, representatives of the parties that won seats in parliament at the general elections on April 12 agreed to propose 10 a.m. on May 9 as the time and date for the session. In light of the consensus reached, the President convened the inaugural session for the specified time and date.
Starting with the inaugural session of Parliament on May 9, the outgoing Orbán government will serve in a caretaker capacity until the new government takes office. During this period, the cabinet’s powers will be limited: it cannot enter into international treaties, and it may issue government decrees only with the authorization of a law and only in “cases of urgent necessity.”
The caretaker government is led by the caretaker prime minister, who during this period may no longer propose the dismissal of a minister or the appointment of a new minister, and whose authority to issue decrees is just as limited as that of the caretaker government. In all other respects, however, he exercises the powers of the prime minister.
