Hungarian Parliament has authorized the government to extend the state of emergency due to the war between Russia and Ukraine until November 25 this year. Thus, the government can continue to rule by decree for another six months.
The amendment to the law “on the prevention and management of the consequences of the armed conflict and humanitarian disaster in Hungary,” was passed with 132 votes of the governing majority in favor and 58 against.
The Hungarian government declared a state of emergency at the end of May last year, which was last extended on 1 November 2022. Made possible by extension this time, not only the emergency could be extended but it also allows for the continuation of governing by decree. This means that laws can continue to be regularly amended by lower-level legislation, government decrees.
