In his usual Friday morning interview on state radio, Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán said that the strength of the Hungarian opposition cannot match the political influence of the organisations financed by Hungarian-norn billionaire George Soros, which constitute “a background power”.
Commenting on Bill Clinton, the former US president, Orbán said: “The mouth is Clinton’s; the voice is George Soros’s.”
In a reply, the opposititon party Democratic Coalition stated that Orbán can thank Soros for his “scholarship in England” and it was also thanks to Soros’s money that other Fidesz officials, József Szájer and Zsolt Németh and government spokesman Zoltán Kovács, had completed their studies.
“Hungary, as it goes through its post-communist transformation, also has a lot to thank Soros for, so Orbán and Fidesz are not only ingrates but their actions are harmful to Hungarian-US relations which are outstandingly important,” the statement, quoted by the Hungarian news agency NTI said. Orbán is perhaps driven by Russian interests when he knowingly damages transatlantic relations, putting Hungary’s security at risk, it added.
