Hungarian Population Still on the Decline

According to preliminary data, 6,172 children were born and 8,758 people died in September 2025, the Central Statistical Office reports.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of births decreased by 8.3% and the number of deaths by 12%, while the number of marriages increased by 17%.

In September 2025:
6,172 children were born, 8.3% (559) fewer than in September 2024.

8,758 people lost their lives, 12% (1,230) fewer than a year earlier.

The natural population decline was 2,586, compared to 3,257 in September 2024.

6,313 couples got married, 17% more than a year earlier, an increase of 899.

January–September 2025:
54,305 children were born, 6.8% (3,964) fewer than in the same period of the previous year. Within this, the number of live births was 4.2% lower in January, 8.6% lower in February–March, 12% lower in April–May, 1.7% lower in June–July, and 6.8% lower in August–September than in the same periods of 2024.

The total fertility rate per woman was estimated at 1.32, compared to 1.39 a year earlier.

There were 92,210 deaths, 1.9% or 1,775 fewer than a year earlier. In January, there were 7.8% more deaths than in the same months of the previous year, in February 0.7% more, in March 7.3% more, in April–June 1.2% more, while in July–September 13% fewer deaths than in the same months of the previous year.

As a result of the balance between births and deaths, the natural population decline was 37,905, 6.1% more than the previous year's figure of 35,716.

37,288 couples got married, 2.4% or 906 fewer than a year earlier. There were 9.8% fewer marriages in January–February, 3.9% fewer in March–April, and 7.8% fewer in June–August, while there were 2.4% more marriages in May and 17% more in September than in the same months of 2024.
