There were 8.6% fewer live births and the number of deaths rose considerably, by 26%, in November 2020 compared to the previous month, the natural decrease going up from 4,216 in October to 8,032 by November.
In January–November 2020, the number of births was 4.4% and that of deaths 3.3% larger, as a result of which the natural decrease was up by 0.9% or 346 according to preliminary data compared to a year earlier. In November 2020, the number of live births rose slightly, by 0.3%, and that of deaths substantially, by 52% on the same month of 2019, so the natural decrease grew by 190%, the Central Statistical Office reports.
In November 2020:
- 7,334 children were born, 0.3% or 19 more than in November 2019.
- 15,366 people lost their lives, 52% or 5,279 more than a year earlier. This has been the highest monthly number of deaths since January 2000, which was then caused by the peaking seasonal flu epidemic.
- The number of deaths rose to a higher extent than the number of births, and because of this the natural decrease over the month was 8,032, which was a growth of 190% on 2,772 in November 2019.
- The number of marriages decreased by 14%; 3,661 couples got married, 595 fewer than in November 2019.
