Hungarian biochemist Katalin Karikó and fellow researcher Drew Weissman were this year's winners of the Breakthrough Prize, one of the most prestigious scientific awards with the largest prize money, USD three million. The recognition was, of course, earned for the mRNA research that enabled the rapid development of mRNA-based Covid vaccines.
The Breakthrough Prize was founded in 2012, mainly by Silicon Valley businessmen, including Mark Zuckerberg and Google founder Sergey Brin. Each year, the prize is awarded in three categories - life sciences, mathematics and physics - to researchers who have made significant breakthroughs in their fields. The award comes with a prize of USD three million and is decided by a committee of the Prize Foundation.
