Bernarda Pera of the United States has won the USD 250,000 Hungarian Grand Prix women's clay court tennis tournament in Budapest, defeating Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic in two straight sets (6-3, 6-3) in Sunday's final.
On the final day of the tournament at the Római Tennis Academy, the final was played in bright sunshine, 26 degrees Celsius in front of some 600 spectators according to the state news agency MTI.
The 27-year-old left-handed American, born in Zadar, Croatia but competing in American colors since 2013, quickly took a 3-0 lead and then carried her break advantage all the way to take the opening set in 44 minutes, taking advantage of her fifth set point. 29-year-old Krunic, born in Moscow, put up a better performance in the second set but Pera broke her serve after 3-all and – despite being fairly clumsy in handling drop shots of her Serbian opponent – managed to take the second set 6-3 as well, celebrating her very first WTA title after 1 hour 27 minutes.
