Hungary’s Kristóf Milák won the silver medal in the men’s 100m butterfly at the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday with a European record.
Milák, the winner of 200m butterfly event this Wednesday, swam in the final with the next to 100m freestyle winner Caeleb Dressel of the United States, the favorite in the 100m butterfly. The American had his usual great start to take the lead into the second 50, where Milák was closing in on him, but could not catch up with him.
Dressel, the two-time world champion in the event, crossed the finish line in a world record of 49.45 seconds, five hundredths off the record he set at the World Championships two years ago. The 21-year-old Hungarian was 23 hundredths of a behind, but still beat, by 27 hundredths, the European super-dress record set by Serbia's Milorad Cavic in 2009. Milák's 49.68 was exactly half a second better than his personal best and the national record he set at the European Championships in Budapest in May.
The two excellent swimmers hugged each other with smiles as soon as they crossed the finish line, both clearly pleased with their own results.
"I'm relieved, it's finally over. Now, I feel proud because I couldn't swim any better than that, so I think we did the best we could for each other," Milák said.
This was the Hungarian delegation's sixth medal and second silver at the Tokyo Games.
In men’s waterpolo, the Hungarian team beat the United States 11-8. After four games, the Hungarian side is now on six points in Group A and will certainly qualify for the quarter-finals. On Monday, Italy will be the last opponent for the Hungarian team in the group stage.
In handball, the Hungarian women's national team beat Spain 29-25 in their match on Saturday, which means they still have a chance to reach the quarter-finals. But to do so, they will have to beat group leaders Sweden on Monday.
In sailing, Hungary’s Finn dinghy World and European Champion Zsombor Berecz is still in third place overall after the two races on Saturday. He finished third in heat seven and fifth in heat eight.
