Hungary’s Viktor Lőrincz lost Wednesday's final of the Greco-Roman wrestling 87 kg category at the Tokyo Olympics and had to be content with the silver medal.
The 31-year-old had a reason to take revenge on two-time world and three-time European champion and Rio Olympics silver medalist Zhan Belenyuk of Ukraine after losing to that ace of the weight class in the final of the last World Championships in 2019.
Both sides looked cautious in the first three minutes, but the 2017 continental champion Hungarian wrestler was somewhat more active and after a minute the referee warned his rival. With no change in Belenyuk's fighting style, they cautioned him (1-0 to the Hungarian), but Lőrincz failed to capitalize on the par terre situation, as when he tried a reverse lift, his opponent escaped the hold and immediately popped to his feet.
The real fight started after the break, when both sides shifted into higher gear, but after a minute Lőrincz, was cautioned (1-1). Belenyuk, however, took advantage of his more advantageous position and scored two spins to take a 5-1 lead. In the remaining minute and a half, Lőrincz pushed in vain against the seemingly unstoppable Belenyuk.
This second place means that Viktor Lőrincz won the Hungarian Olympic delegation's 12th medal in the Japanese capital. On the medal table, Hungary is the 14th with four gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
