The weather was not kind to runners at the Budapest Marathon this weekend, but more than 3,000 people still took part in the 42-kilometer race.
In the men's race, Hungary’s Péter Nagy crossed the line first in 2 hours 33 minutes and 37 seconds, while the women's race was won by Anna Borisenko from Russia, who finished in 2:58:12.
The handbike racers started one minute before the marathoners, with Hungarian László Schober (2:20:47) being the first to cross the finish line. The field of the classic race included Géza Kele who completed his 200th marathon distance while Gábor Zacher, chief emergency physician at the hospital in Hatvan, competed in a relay. Other participants included judges from the Hungarian Handball Federation, triathletes, actors, musicians and artists.
A memorial tent in honor of renowned Hungarian long-distance runner Sarolta Monspart, was set up to display the late world champion orienteer's photos, her trophies, her book ‘The Wonderful World of Running’ and her 2010 Prima Primissima award.
All in all, more than 13,000 people took part in the 36th Budapest Spar Marathon, with family events and shorter distance races on Saturday and 30-kilometer races, relays and the marathon distance on Sunday.
