More than 10,000 people have registered for this Sunday's 38th Wizz Air Budapest Half Marathon, which will also be the national championship for the 21,097-meter distance.
The organizers Budapest Sportiroda said in a statement on Tuesday that 6,300 runners had signed up for the event's "king's race", the individual half marathon, with 1,170 of them preparing to run their first half marathon. One in four of the runners in this race will be foreigners, with 2,100 entries from 94 countries from across the border for the various events, approaching the records set before the new coronavirus epidemic.
"After the epidemic, there has been a significant increase in the enthusiasm for running in Hungary and international running tourism has gained momentum," race director Árpád Kocsis said.
"Once again, many runners are tackling the half-marathon for the first time, and again nearly 10% of runners are raising money for charity or making donations. The additional music half marathon will also return, as we will be encouraging runners and entertaining spectators with music every mile and a half," Árpád Kocsis added.
The start and finish area will be at the ELTE Lágymányosi Campus, on the Pázmány Péter promenade, and the route will touch some of the capital's sights.
