Hungary's Tamás Lőrincz won the Olympic championship title in the Greco-Roman wrestling 77 kg category at the Tokyo Games after defeating Kyrgyzstan's Akzsol Mahmudov 2-1 in Tuesday's final - the second gold medal for the Hungarian delegation on this day.

The 34-year-old wrestler crowned his career with this success after winning a world and four European titles. Nine years ago, in the 66-kilogram category, he finished second at the London Games.

The Kyrgyz competitor started the final in a very aggressive and attacking spirit, and after one and a half minutes Lőrincz was the first to receive a caution (0-1). The Hungarian wrestler defended the par terre position with all his routine, as he broke free from the hold after a few seconds and the fight continued from standing position.

After the break, Lőrincz surprised Mahmudov with an attack and pushed him off the mat (1-1). The draw was in his favor with (having won the last point), but he did not let his opponent rest, who was cautioned for passivity (2-1). This time, however, Lőrincz, who tried a reverse raise, failed to show any worthwhile action. The Kyrgyz wrestler was completely out of chances in the remaining time, and Tamás Lőrincz became Olympic champion to the loud countdown of the Hungarian officials.

Tamás Lőrincz's triumph not only completed his collection of medals, but he retires as the reigning Olympic, World and European champion in the weight class. His 31-year-old brother also has the chance to stand on the top of the podium as he wrestles for the Olympic title of the 87-kilogram category this Wednesday.

The last time a Hungarian wrestler won the Olympics was in 2004 when István Majoros triumphed in the 55-kilogram category. Tamás Lőrincz is the 20th Olympic gold medalist in Hungarian wrestling and the 19th Hungarian gold medalist wrestler in the history of the Games.
