In the men's kayak single 200-meter event, Hungary's Sándor Tótka needed a photo finish to be declared the winner, Tamara Csipes finished second in the women's kayak single 500-meter event while the second silver of the day for Hungary was produced by Kristóf Rasovszky in the men's 10-kilometer open water swim race.
According to the photo finish, Tótka, this year’s European champion in this event, beat Italy's Manfredi Rizza 0.45 seconds with Liam Heath of Great Britain crossing the finish line in third place with another Hungarian, Kolos Csizmadia coming in fourth. 27-year-old Tótka shot out from the start and managed to retain a few centimeters ahead of Rizza at the finish line. Tótka is the first non-British paddler to win this event since it was introduced to the Olympics in 2012.
Also on the Sea Forest Waterway race course, the favorite in the women's kayak single 500-meter event was New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington, winner in the 200-meter single and 500-meter double races. She took the lead from the start with Hungary’s Tamara Csipes having no chance to overtake her. The Hungarian came in second and Denmark’s Emma Jörgensen third. Hungary’s five-time Olympic champion and the defending champion of this event, Danuta Kozák, could only clinch fourth place this time.
The third Hungarian medal of the day was also won in watersports. World and European champion Kristóf Rasovszky finished second in the men's 10-kilometer open water swim race in Odaiba Bay. The Hungarian swimmer was always part of the leading group but on the last lap, Germany’s Florian Wellbrock pulled away from the others to win the race ahead of Rasovszky, with Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy coming in third.
These another three medals bring the Hungarian Olympic delegation to 13th position on the Toyko 2020 medal table, where Hungary boasts five gold, seven silver and three bronze medals.
