An application developed in Hungary is to form a community approach to food waste: through the application, canteens, menu restaurants and restaurant chains can also sell their remaining but untouched and high-quality food, giving them extra income and consumers with discounted offers and a variety of dishes.
According to the data of the National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) of Hungary, 1.8 million tons of food waste is generated in Hungary every year, while a third of the almost 4 billion tons of food produced in the world is trashed.
This TUDATOS ('Conscious') application and the related online interfaces, which also include useful green practices, forge a community of users who care about the environment and our planet.
As it was highlighted by NÉBIH on the recent World Day Against Food Waste, households are also at the forefront of food waste in Hungary. A person produces 65 kg of food waste in the course of a year, while an average family of four throws away almost HUF 50,000 worth of food they bought unnecessarily. In the second place is the cost of food waste in the catering industry, which, taking into account the average of European countries, means about HUF 980,000 of food waste per ton per year. This amount of food lands in the trash and goes through production, processing, logistics and destruction processes, along with the unnecessary use of water and chemicals, as well as carbon emissions.
