Hungarians are more aware of sustainability, but are less willing to spend on it this year, according to a survey conducted by Opinio market researcher on behalf of Rondo Hullámkartongyártó [corrugated board manufacturer] Ltd.
Environmentally friendly packaging was rated as important by 50% of respondents in the run-up to the festive season. If it did not mean a big price difference for them, 59% of the respondents would pay extra, but only 8% would do so under any circumstances.
A year earlier, only 29% of respondents said they would consider environmentally friendly packaging a major concern, while 74% would be willing to pay for more environmentally friendly packaging, at least in some cases.
In this year's survey, 23% of respondents said they planned to buy environmentally friendly packaging for their gifts. Paper packaging is the preferred choice for most people, with 59% planning to use wrapping paper and 36% paper bags and boxes.
A significant proportion of Hungarians will continue to take the usual steps towards sustainability during the holidays: 69% will collect selective waste, 49% will reuse products and 46% will reduce the use of plastic bags. Separate waste collection has become more popular since last year, when only 59% of respondents thought about it.
A representative survey of 1,131 people aged 16-59 in Hungary was carried out by Opinion in the second week of November to find out, among other things, whether people pay attention to sustainability during the holidays. The survey was also carried out in 2021.
