The Mercure hotel in Debrecen has been awarded the BREEAM Excellent international sustainability rating, it has announced at a press conference held at the hotel.
BREEAM is a sustainability rating system developed in the United Kingdom, and currently Mercure Debrecen is the highest-scoring BREEAM-certified hotel in Hungary. That was stated by Sándor Szabó, Deputy General Manager of Szinorg Universal Plc., which built the hotel.
The accommodation establishment opened two years ago in the center of the eastern Hungarian city of Debrecen and is the first hotel in Hungary outside the capital to be awarded the BREEAM international sustainability standard in the "excellent" category, he added.
He also said that the certification was awarded in 9+1 categories, meaning that the hotel meets strict environmental performance standards to provide a green and safe environment for its guests while minimizing its ecological footprint.
One interesting manifestation of their efforts is the installation of a bee colony on the roof of the hotel building downtown this year, with the bees producing 60 kilograms of honey for hotel guests so far.
Sándor Szabó mentioned, among other things, that energy saving, environmentally conscious use of materials and waste management, and the reduction of water waste are all part of sustainability, as are, for example, wooden key cards and wooden door hangers.
