Residential and public buildings were evaluated on the basis of sustainability criteria in the first Sustainable Building Envelope competition, the organizers told MTI on Monday.

The best residential building was the Emilia House in Diósd, designed by Bálint Bakos, Péter Kosik and Máté Molnár, and built by the Equinox International architecture firm. Among the new public buildings, the winner is the multi-purpose technical building of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH), designed by Nirmana architectural practice, Péter Vékony.

In the renovation category, Ilona Nánási Kiskarándi and Mihály Magyar, designers at Budapest Airport Arena Events and Sports Center, received the best of the best award, it was announced.

The organizers reasoned that the energy consumption required for the construction and operation of buildings and the reduction of pollutant emissions are increasingly important considerations, and it is therefore worth presenting the best technical solutions to market players.

The evaluations point out that “new buildings are needed, but that an existing building frame can also be put to good use if it is properly renovated. Durable solutions that offer value for money ensure long-term sustainability and easy maintenance," they stress.

The Sustainable Building Envelope tender was launched by Build-Communication Ltd. and BC Ananas S.L., according to the tender website. Their professional sponsor was the Department of Building Structures of the Faculty of Architecture of the BME. Designers could enter the competition with buildings constructed or renovated since January 2020, according to the website.
