The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) surveyed Hungarians aged 14 and over to find out who still has a fixed line phone, and the results of the representative survey show that half of the population still uses it.
Almost 90% of those surveyed have a landline phone only because of a package they can subscribe to with TV and internet, and only one in eight households subscribe to this service separately. A third of all subscribers never use a landline phone, and a tenth of these households do not even have a handset anymore, only the subscription," the statement said.
Half of Hungarian households now use only fixed telephones, but 94% have a mobile phone and the vast majority - 71% - have fixed internet.
The largest proportion of people using it are elderly people who consider themselves well-off - 69% - which is 1.3 million people. Young people of average or poor means are the least likely to use it, 29% of this group in particular, and even among middle-aged people in good circumstances, only 57%. The research shows that only 45% of older people can replace their landline phone with a mobile phone, compared to 75% to 78% of young people.
"A significant proportion of particularly price-sensitive Hungarian subscribers use this service because it is handy and does not cost them extra, says the statement, which shows that many people save money by using landlines at work, with 20% of working people making a landline call outside the home. The NMHH survey found that landline phones are still needed by the elderly and by businesses (scores 82 and 81 on a scale of 100).
