Hungarian Tourism Figure: 97% Fall in April

As a result of the coronavirus epidemic, in April 2020, the number of nights spent by international tourists fell by 99% and that of nights spent by domestic tourists by 95% compared to the same period of the previous year in commercial accommodation establishments, the Central Statistical Office reports.

Total gross sales revenues declined by 97% at current prices in commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels).

In April 2020, three thousand foreign guests spent 17,000 tourism nights in accommodation establishments. Guest turnover was negligible for all accommodation types and regions, with the number of tourism nights not reaching 1% of the April value of the previous year in Budapest and the Balaton region.

As for domestic guests, 18,000 of them (96% less than in April 2019) spent 52,000 tourism nights (95% decrease), with boarding houses accounting for nearly half of all tourism nights, showing a below average 81% decline.

In April 2020, 1,297 commercial accommodation establishments were open. Half of the accommodation establishments did not receive guests. In January-April 2020, compared to the same period of the previous year, a total of 4.2 million tourism nights were registered at commercial accommodation establishments (43% fewer than a year before). International guests spent 44% and domestic guests 42% fewer tourism nights (2.1 million and 2.1 million, respectively) in commercial accommodation establishments.

Total gross sales revenues of commercial accommodation establishments decreased by 39% at current prices and amounted to HUF 83 billion.
