The number of tourists in Hungary climbed over 20 million in 2025, a new record, the head of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, Zoltán Güller said at an industry gala on Sunday.
He stated that the Central Statistics Office (KSH) recorded around 19.5 million tourists in 2025, but those figures didn't include the 600,000 passengers on Danube cruise ships.
Hungary's tourism sector expaded at more than twice the rate of the average for European Union member states, he added.
Zoltán Güller said Hungary's tourism sector had reached a threshold and couldn't handle many more tourists with existing capacities. He added that the focus in the coming years would be to draw bigger spenders who stay longer in the country.
He pointed to a shortage of 10,000-15,000 hotel rooms in the capital and said the state could subsidise credit for the construction of new lodgings in the coming four years.
Zoltán Güller highlighted the positive impact on the sector of the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK), the state's purchase of Liszt Ferenc International Airport and the rollout of subsidised credit and grant programmes for tourism businesses.
