In April 2023, 1.2 million guests spent 2.9 million tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments (commercial, private and other accommodation). The number of guests was 6.7% and that of tourism nights 1.2% higher than a year earlier, thanks to an expansion in foreign visitor turnover, MTI quoted figures by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).
The number of nights spent by domestic guests fell by 6.0%. In January-April 2023, domestic guests spent 8.4% less and foreign ones 13% more tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.
Tourist accommodation establishments saw an overall increase of 6.7% in the number of arrivals and 1.2% in that of tourism nights. 72% of all tourism nights were in commercial accommodation, where turnover fell by 0.9%. Private and other accommodation recorded 7.1% more tourism nights than in April 2022.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals decreased by 3.0% and that of tourism nights by 6.0% compared to the same month of the previous year. Guests numbered 614,000 and nights spent 1.4 million at tourist accommodation establishments, including 441,000 guests staying 1.0 million nights at commercial accommodation establishments. 73% of the latter were spent in hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 6.1% lower than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by domestic guests in private and other accommodation establishments increased by 0.5% compared to April 2022. The two most popular tourism regions, the Budapest-Central Danube Region and Lake Balaton, both recorded 19% of domestic tourism nights, respectively.
International tourist arrivals rose by 20% and tourism nights by 9.2% in number compared to the same month of the previous year. A total of 543,000 guests spent 1.5 million nights in tourist accommodation, of which 402,000 guests and 1.1 million nights were registered in commercial accommodation. 80% of the latter were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent was 7.0% higher than a year earlier. The number of nights spent by foreign visitors in private and other accommodation increased by 14% compared to April 2022. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where 67% of international tourism nights were registered.
A total of 20,119 tourist accommodation establishments, including 2,355 commercial establishments and 17,764 private and other accommodation establishments, welcomed guests.
