Budapest Airport will increase the annual air cargo handling capacity of Liszt Ferenc International Airport from the current 250,000 tons to 300,000 tons with the expansion of Bud Cargo City, René Droese, Deputy Chief Development Officer of Budapest Airport, said on Wednesday at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Cargo City Handling building expansion.
Bud Cargo City handled a record 200,000 tons of air cargo last year, an increase of 5. 8% compared to 2021 and 43% compared to 2019.
The deputy CEO recalled that Budapest Airport started building the cargo centre in 2018 with an investment of 50 million euros, the first phase of which was inaugurated in 2020. This is now being expanded with a further €30 million development, including EUR 18 million for the buildings and EUR 12 million for the extension of the apron that will receive aircraft. The second phase is due to be completed by the end of this year, he added.
According to René Droese, the building serving air cargo will be extended by 6,700 square metres on the ground floor, complemented by a 2,200-square-meter office area in the galleries. "With 12,000 people working in air cargo handling and logistics, the development is aimed at making Bud Cargo City even more the leading air cargo hub in the region," the Deputy CEO stressed.
