Since last August, double capacity has been available on the apron of the BUD Cargo City, enabling the concurrent handling of four code F aircraft. In December, another milestone was reached in the development of the complex, and February saw the handover of the 10,000 square meters of new warehouse space, which, together with offices and operational infrastructure, increases the capacity of the air cargo handling complex to 300,000 tons per year.
A statement by Budapest Airport, the management company of the Hungarian capital’s Ferenc Liszt International Airport says that this represents a 40% increase in capacity, in response to the ever-increasing demand from cargo operators. By 2040, the airport’s air cargo hub is expected to contribute 40 billion HUF to the country’s GDP.
The continued development of BUD Cargo City is a strategic investment for Budapest Airport. The current expansion not only further strengthens the role of BUD Cargo City as a hub in the region, but also contributes to the growth of the Hungarian air cargo industry.
It is a general trend in the logistics industry that the volume of goods handled in January, after a strong pre-Christmas period, decreases. However, in contrast to the trend that has been prevalent for years, Budapest Airport handled almost the same amount of goods in January this year as in December, which is a peak month. In 2023, Budapest Airport closed the last month of the year with 18 670 tons of cargo handled, while in January, nearly the same amount, 18 070 tons of goods were handled. This outstanding figure is 38% higher than in January 2023, and is in line with the pace of development at Budapest Airport, with the cargo handling capacity of BUD Cargo City having increased by 40% compared to last year. This latest standout result is mainly due to the growth in traffic from China and the increase in the volume of e-commerce goods.
The company has developed the capacity of its air cargo handling complex in line with the growth in demand, whereby it exceeded the dream threshold of 200,000 tons last year, and will be able to handle 300,000 tons of cargo this year, making BUD Cargo City a rival to Munich and Vienna, according to the airport bulletin by Budapest Airport.
