Passenger number at the Hungarian capital's Ferenc Liszt International Airport was at 1,822,483 in May, up by 7.1% compared to the same month a year earlier the facility's operator, Budapest Airport said in a statement this Friday. Most travellers arrived from London, Paris and Milan. The UEFA Champions League final was held in Budapest at the end of May, boosting traffic.

Although the school year was still underway in May, with the arrival of good weather, the approaching peak season is already evident in passenger traffic, which thus exceeded 7.6 million for the first five months.

The cargo business continued to grow strongly; the 41,398 tons of cargo handled represents an 11.7% increase over the previous year. The steadily rising cargo volume resulted in the handling of 188,457 tons of air cargo at the airport between January and May.

Budapest Airport adds in its statement that it is committed to promoting equal opportunities and therefore pays special attention to the needs of passengers with disabilities. The DANOVA NEXT project, co-financed by the European Union, also serves this goal.

Starting in June, as part of the project, orientation will be even easier at Terminal 2 of Ferenc Liszt International Airport; an indoor navigation application, also available in Hungarian, assists passengers. The development provides support for visually impaired, wheelchair-bound and able-bodied passengers on both the landside and airside of the terminal. Its wheelchair mode prioritizes accessible routes, allowing the app to offer personalized assistance to passengers with limited mobility.

In addition to this digital development, Budapest Airport has also installed tactile lanes. On the curbside of Terminal 2, tactile lanes connect the building’s entrance to the existing interior routes designed for the visually impaired, allowing these passengers to reach the terminal independently and more safely. The total length of the airport’s tactile lanes is nearly two kilometers.
