Hungarians travelled abroad 4.7 million times between April and June this year, 53% more than in the same period a year earlier, but the number of trips abroad fell by 24% compared to the second quarter of 2019, according to the quarterly publication of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).
The most popular destinations were Austria, Slovakia and Romania, with two-thirds of trips going to these countries. Hungarians spent an average of 2.7 days abroad, 0.8 days more than a year earlier.
According to KSH data, Hungarians travelling abroad spent HUF 245 billion at current prices, more than three times more than a year earlier and 10% more than in the second quarter of 2019. Hungarians spent an average of HUF 19,500 per person per day abroad, compared to HUF 11,600 in the base period.
By country, Hungarian travelers spent the most in Austria (HUF 48 billion), but visitors to Germany and Italy also spent significantly (HUF 31 billion and HUF 18 billion respectively).
According to the report, foreigners made 10.9 million trips to Hungary during the same period. The number of visits increased by 41% compared to the same quarter last year, but was only 75% of the number in the second quarter of 2019.
The time spent in Hungary by inbound visitors increased to 25.2 million days, up by a third from the base period of the previous year.
Multi-day visitors spent an average of 5.6 days per trip in Hungary, down by nearly a third year-on-year.
Foreign visitors to Hungary spent HUF 556 billion at current prices in the second quarter of 2022, almost twice as much as in the same period of the previous year and just under 1% less than in the second quarter of 2019, before the epidemic.
The amount spent by day visitors (HUF 132 billion) was one and a half times higher than in the same period a year earlier, while that of multi-day visitors (HUF 424 billion) was nearly two and a half times higher.
Visitors from Austria spent the most (HUF 88 billion), with more than two fifths of their expenditure on healthcare, one fifth on leisure, leisure and health-related trips and another fifth on purchases.
Visitors from Germany spent HUF 56 billion in Hungary on trips, mostly for private purposes. Business travelers spent HUF 16 billion and business travelers HUF 7 billion.
According to the KSH, Hungarian tourists' spending abroad exceeded the spending of foreigners visiting Hungary by HUF 311 billion in the second quarter.
