The Hungarian capital's Ferenc Liszt International Airport had its strongest summer on record as summer passenger numbers exceeded 6.2 million, climbing 13.7% from the base period, airport operator Budapest Airport announced.

In September, not even the start of the school year could slow down the soaring passenger traffic, the start of fall brought 1,955,581 passengers, surpassing even the summer months of previous years, a statement by the operator says.

Among travelers departing from Budapest, London remained at the top of the travel list during the summer months and in September, but Istanbul, Antalya and Frankfurt were also popular destinations. The country pairs traditionally generating the most passenger traffic showed strong annual growth, passenger traffic increased by 9.5% to Italy, 18.8% to Spain, 9.9% to France and 10.9% to Greece.

As for inbound traffic, passengers from France, Italy and the United Kingdom were the most frequent visitors. From this summer schedule, flights to Philadelphia and Toronto became available again, leading to a dramatic increase in transatlantic traffic, passenger numbers from the United States and Canada rose by tens of thousands, as American Airlines and Air Canada flights operated with outstanding load factors.

Direct flights to Asia achieved high load factors, even with the high number of available seats, 20,000 more direct seats were available to China and 60,000 more to South Korea.
