The discount chain Lidl Hungary has sold more than 200 million bottles of Hungarian wine in the past ten years, half of which in its international stores, and the annual sales volume has increased fivefold since 2014, the company informed MTI on Wednesday.
According to the statement, since the food retail chain launched its supplier program in 2014, which also supports the access of domestic wines to foreign markets, Hungarian wineries and wine producers have received more than HUF 90 billion in revenues.
Last year, the supermarket chain sold 29 million bottles of Hungarian wine in Hungary and on foreign markets, up from six million bottles ten years ago. Hungarian wines were available in six European countries when the program was launched, but last year they were available in 17 countries.
The Lidl Wine Expo program, which supports the export potential of Hungarian family wineries, also fits in well with the Hungarian government's national strategy, they said.
In the past decade, the most popular varieties of Hungarian wine sold in foreign supermarkets – more than 100 million bottles – included Szürkebarát, Királyleányka, Egri Bikavér, Tokaji Furmint and Irsai Olivér.
