Hungary is the second safest country in the world regarding the storage of nuclear materials. That according to the Washington-based Nuclear Threat Initiative that has compiled a list after surveying hundreds of establishments all over the world.
The Nuclear Threat Initiative's Nuclear Materials Security Index is a first-of-its-kind public benchmarking project of nuclear materials security conditions on a country-by-country basis in 176 countries. The NTI Index, prepared with the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), is aimed at to sparking international discussion about priorities required to strengthen security and, most important, encourage governments to provide assurances and take actions to reduce risks.
Among the 32 states with weapons-usable nuclear materials, Australia ranks number one, followed by Hungary, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Austria rounding out the top five. The United Kingdom ranks highest among nuclear-armed states at 10; the United States ranks 13th. Among countries without weapons-usable nuclear materials, Denmark earns the top spot.
