The Hungarian oil and gas company Mol has signed an agreement with BayWa AG to purchase the Szarvas Biogas Plant, a waste processing facility that uses organic waste to generate electricity and heat through cogeneration with a peak electrical capacity of about 4 megawatts in the eastern Hungarian town of Szarvas.
According to the company, the plant will process more than 40,000 tons of waste from meat production in the region and an additional 53,000 tons of residual waste (such as slurry and manure) from neighboring livestock and meat processing farms. In addition, some 18 thousand tons of agricultural substrates are used as feedstock for a biogas plant producing more than 12.5 million cubic meters of biogas.
The purchase of the plant is subject to the approval of the Office of Economic Competition.
The announcement stressed that the Mol Group is seeking to expand its biofuel portfolio to contribute to the targets set by the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive. This acquisition is also in line with the REPowerEU Action Plan, which has set a high target for biogas and methane production to reasonably increase the overall energy independence of the European Union.
For the Mol Group, the acquisition of the Szarvas Biogas Plant is an opportunity to expand the company's sustainable energy production portfolio. Not only does the plant have one of the largest biogas production capacities in the Central and Eastern European region, it is also located in an area where Mol is active in research and development. This provides a unique synergy as it provides infrastructure for the development of biogas plant products, the statement said.
