Lidl Hungary sold Hungarian wine worth HUF 14.2 billion at home and abroad, with sales up by almost 60% in five years, the supermarket chain told MTI.
Export sales have reached 15 million bottles, with Furmint, Királyleányka and Szürkebarát being the most popular Hungarian wines abroad. The offer is wide-ranging, with products from family wineries and large wineries alike being marketed, generating more than HUF 60 billion in revenue from 2018 to 2022. Lidl currently sells more than 200 types of Hungarian wine in 16 European countries, they said.
The supermarket chain decided almost a decade ago to give priority to bottled wines as part of its program for Hungarian suppliers and help producers sell abroad. The initiative is seen as a success, with Hungarian wines maintaining their competitiveness despite market difficulties, according to the statement. They highlighted that two of Lidl's own-brand wines won gold medals at this year's Berliner Wein Trophy international wine competition.
The supermarket chain reported record sales a year ago, with annual sales of 30.1 million bottles, up 1.6 million bottles on a year earlier. In value terms, sales were also strong, with Hungarian wine worth HUF 7.8 billion sold abroad, an increase of 56% compared to two years earlier. The biggest foreign buyers were the UK, Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Also last year, it was reported that Hungarian companies and businesses exported a total of HUF 81 billion worth of wine through Lidl, up 26.5% on the previous year. Besides wine, the most popular Hungarian products abroad were biscuits and snacks, oil, margarine, frozen products, pet food, bread, fresh meat, vegetables and fruit. Romania was the largest market in terms of export value, while Slovakia was the largest destination.
According to its latest report, Lidl Hungary achieved a turnover of more than HUF 748 billion and a profit of HUF 33 billion in the financial year ending February 2022. A year earlier, it closed with a turnover of more than HUF 668 billion and a profit of almost HUF 28.5 billion. Foreign sales increased from HUF 1.6 billion to almost HUF 1.85 billion. The chain was established in Hungary in 2004 and today operates 197 stores and 4 logistics centers in Hungary.
