Tesco refurbished 25 of its stores in the 2022/23 financial year ending in February. The refurbishments have involved 12 hypermarkets and 13 convenience stores across Hungary to provide customers with a nicer shopping environment and workers with a more comfortable working environment.
The HUF multi-billion improvements included optimizing the size and design of the stores' sales areas and installing new self-service checkouts in several locations to speed up service, according to a press release by the supermarket chain in Hungary.
From Kőszeg in the West to Debrecen in the East, a total of 25 Tesco stores have received new looks and interiors at Tesco over the past year. Apart from the renewal of the external façade and the complete interior repainting, the most important changes concerned the layout and design of the sales area and the redesign of the rear staff areas.
Operations Director at Tesco Hungary, Martin Coulam is quoted as saying that he has been to each of the chain’s stores at least four times in the last year and a half: “it's great to see the renewal and the progress, and our customers have noticed it. For me, doing more for our customers every day is not a slogan, it's the driving force of my everyday life. Most of last year's refurbishments affected the fresh food areas of our hypermarkets, as we have juxtaposed the bakery and vegetable sections, with new flooring, lighting and counters to ensure that our customers can find all their fresh produce in one place. In addition, the clothes area has a new look, the entrance to the sales area has been revamped and new navigation signs have been installed to help people find their way around the stores. The refurbishments have also extended to the staff canteen and back areas. This is another way of ensuring that our staff can spend their break time in a pleasant environment."
Tesco has also made shopping easier with newly installed self-service checkouts, and in some of the refurbished big stores it is working with specialist retailers in certain product areas, such as MediaMarkt, which operates a 'shop in a shop' on the sales floor.
The chain's convenience stores have also been revamped inside and out, including the exterior façade, replacement of counters, furniture, refrigerators, navigation and marketing communication elements, while the assortment has been updated in several locations.
