The Hungarian retailers association OKSZ pressed for a mandatory cap on markups of food products to be phased out in a statement issued on Monday and sent to MTI.
OKSZ chief secretary Tamás Kozák said there was "no reason" for maintaining the 10% cap in force for a range of food products. He added that National Economy Minister Márton Nagy had earlier suggested the cap could be phased out when food price inflation fell under 5%.
He noted that food prices, excluding the price of eating out, had risen under 5% since March, while overall food prices had reached 4.7% in September.
Kozák warned that the measure would contribute to the increasing number of shop closures.
