Artworks from seventeen countries were presented at the 7th International Triennial of Textile Art, which opened on Friday afternoon at the Szombathely Art Gallery.
In the nationally announced wall and space textile category, there are 72 works on display, 36 in the textile design category, 92 miniature textiles in the international category as well as 13 flags and 32 ribbons.
The exhibition was opened by art historian Anna Cebula, the director of the Szombathely Art Gallery, who said she was delighted that this year's triennial had an outstanding number of entries for the wall and field textile category, even though the number of foreign exhibitors was less than half the usual number due to the crown virus epidemic.
Anna Cebula said that, in line with the Triennial's thematic description, there is a sense of ‘drift and drifting’. When the members of the Cultural Foundation for Textile Art's Board of Trustees came up with this theme two years ago, no one had any idea how topical it would be, she said.
She added that in addition to the various accompanying textile creations, the exhibition also includes a large number of works made using traditional techniques. As in previous years, the miniature textiles, ribbons and flags were made without any technical or material constraints, so PVC, plaster, nylon, plastic, cardboard, photo and silicone will also appear alongside traditional textiles.
Following the opening of the exhibition, as is tradition, the prizes for the best works in the categories of the International Textile Triennial were awarded.
The exhibition will be open until August 29 at the Szombathely Art Gallery.
