A representative exhibition of the works of more than 600 members of the National Association of Hungarian Artists (MAOE), entitled Horizon, showcasing Hungarian contemporary art, opened on Saturday at the Reök Palace in the southeastern Hungarian city of Szeged.
In his opening speech, László Barnák, Director General of the Szeged National Theater, which also maintains the Regional Center for Art, recalled that this is the seventh time that the MAOE has organized a ‘saloon-like’ thematic exhibition of its members, and the Reök Palace is hosting the large-scale series for the third time.
This year's exhibition attracts a broad spectrum of the profession: from the youngest artists to the middle generation and older, all ages will be represented. This provides an opportunity to explore and juxtapose the many different artistic intentions and forms of expression in contemporary Hungarian visual art.
Artists from the fields of painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics, among others, are also represented at the exhibition that is open until mid-November.
The exhibition, which occupies all the showrooms of the Art Nouveau Palace, is accompanied by an open-air exhibition entitled Encounters, which is open until Sunday only. The traveling exhibition on Ede Magyar Square is not only a visual experience, but also a tribute to the sacrifice of those working in the health sector and other areas of the fight against the epidemic.
As MAOE's vice-president, graphic artist Győző Sárkány said the exhibition comprises large laminated reproductions of the material from the organization’s exhibition ‘Dimension’ in Szeged two years ago, arranged in twelve color boxes.
After the exhibition in Szeged, the travelling exhibition will be presented to the public in Budapest from October 8, in Heroes' Square, with another material, and then the digital prints that form part of the exhibition will be donated to health care institutions and the fairy-tale illustrations to children's hospitals.
