Gwen Jorgensen of the United States won the women’s and Brent McMahon of Canada the men’s race at the ITU Triathlon World Cup in Tiszaújváros, northeastern Hungary this Sunday. The event has been held for the 15th year.

American Gwen Jorgensen clocked 1 hour, 59 minutes and 54 seconds to win the women’s race, ahead of Italy’s Annamaria Mazzetti and Russia’s Irina Abysova Sunday.

After the 1.5-kilometer swim, Jorgensen was only 16th and fell further behind in the 42.6-kilometer cycling leg as she was 47th at the end of the bike race, trailing the leader, Spain’s Maria Pujol by 70 seconds.

In the last leg, a 10-kilometer run, the American triathlete came up with a great performance, just like on August 6, when she finished as runner-up in the ITU World Championship Series event in London, England. She moved into second place in the last lap and eventually crossed the finish line 8 seconds ahead of Mazzetti.

This is Jorgensen’s best result in the World Cup series this year. In May, she finished 5th in Monterrey, Mexico. The best Hungarian competitor was Zsófia Kovács who finished 7th.

Men's race

For Canadian Brent McMahon, it took 1 hour, 48 minutes and 16 seconds to win the men’s competition ahead of Britain’s Aaron Harris and Hungary’s Akos Vanek Sunday.

After the 1.5-kilometer swim, McMahon, who hasn't been on the World Cup podium since 2007, was 10th and was part of the lead group in the 42.6-kilometer cycling leg that he finished in 4th place.

In the last leg, a 10-kilometer run, the Canadian triathlete first came up to podium place and then overtook Harris in the last lap to record his first career World Cup title and his 1st ITU victory since winning Kelowna Pan American Cup in 2008.

Runner-up Aaron Harris made his World Cup debut only last month in Edmonton, Canada, finishing 37th there.

Hungary’s Akos Vanek, who pleased the home crowd with the third place, also achieved the top result of his career after finishing 7th in the Edmonton event last month.
