This March, Nestlé will launch a new coffee pod collection and recycling system for NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto capsules, so the company can take another significant step towards achieving a circular economy by working with consumers.
For the time being, coffee fans can dispose of the used pods in five designated Media Markt stores, but the company is constantly expanding its list of collection points.
Nestlé aims to ensure that no packaging material is disposed of in a landfill and that all its packaging is recycled.
The new program is part of Nestlé's global commitment to make all its packaging materials recyclable or reusable by 2025 and to reduce the use of newly manufactured plastics in its packaging by a third. In addition to the development of packaging materials, the support of recycling and recovery infrastructure is also a priority in all markets, as without adequate collection, sorting and recycling capacities, the recycling of packaging materials cannot be solved, or only in very small quantities.
Nespresso aluminum pods have been collected and processed in Hungary since 2012. As part of Nestlé's global commitment, NESCAFÉ Dolce Gusto coffee pods will also be collectable and recyclable from March this year. In parallel, Nestlé is constantly working to make the pods lighter and use less plastic to make them, but is also exploring the use of non-plastic materials from renewable sources.
“Ensuring the collection and recycling of coffee pods is a significant step on the road to the implementation of a circular system. With this development, we also want to support our customers in making environmentally conscious decisions,” according to Anna Hőgyész, Sustainability Manager of Nestlé Hungária.
