Among others, Kobo Town, Kommuna Lux, Gangar, Ti'Kaniki, Puuluup, Koza Mostra, Vinicio Capossela, Djely Tapa and Barrut will be among the world music acts on the Global Village stage at this year's Sziget Festival.
From August 10 to 15, a wide range of genres and styles will line up, from Mexican cumbia punk to Celtic and gypsy music to Greek ethno ska-rock. There will be circus performances from India and giant puppets, the organizers told MTI on Friday.
They said the Global Village stage has invited the best of world music from the Balkans to South America, Mali to Korea and India to the Middle East. The concerts will be preceded by music workshops during the day.
You can dance to calypso music at a concert by Kobo Town from Trinidad, Canada, and Mexican cumbia punk music by the band Son Rompe Pera. Kommuna Lux from Odessa, the Ukrainian Balaklava Blues from Canada, the up-and-coming progressive folk band Gangar from Norway, the ethno-punk band Varkocs from Slovakia, the gypsy singer Marcela from Paris, the multicultural German band Lakvar, the French-Greek Deli Teli, who combine 60s rock'n'roll with traditional Greek tsifteteli, and the French-Greek band Deli Lakvar will also be playing.
The British Langan Band present their new pan-European album inspired by Celtic and gypsy styles. Ti'Kaniki from the island of Réunion will be on hand, but there will also be a chance to rave to Estonian duo Puuluup and Greek ethno-ska-rock artist Koza Mostra. The cheerful Belgian brass band Orchestre International du Vetex will also take to the stage, as will Italy's Vinicio Capossela.
Several artistic collaborations will take place on the Island, such as the French Alright Mela's collaboration with Pakistani Qawwali singer Shahzad Santoo Khan, or the American-French-Lebanese-Armenian collective Al-Qasar, which will return to its roots by playing Arabic fusion. From the Middle East comes the new Israeli Balkan-Klezmer band Pulkes, and the well-known Anna RF will be playing electro-ethnic reggae from the East.
Visitors will also be able to listen to a variety of African music styles: roots duo Madalitso Band will take you to Malawi, dancer Bamba Wassoulou Groove will evoke the hot nights of Bamako, diva Djely Tapa will come from Mali, Lass, dubbed the "new Youssou N'Dour", will take you to Senegal, and BCUC will take you to the music world of South Africa. ADG7 fuses South Korean traditional music with pop, and will be joined by Barrut, seven singers and a percussionist who draw on vocal polyphony from the French Occitania region.
Among the local acts, folk-ska-punk hits from Bohemian Betyars, reggae band Manaky and ethno-dark-rock group Mordái will also take to the Global Village stage.
In addition to the music, India's Circus Raj will perform with acrobats, musicians, tightrope walkers and a fakir. The Congo Massa giant puppets of the French company Archibald Caramantran will also invite you to dance, accompanied by a giraffe, a zebra and two beautiful birds.
