From April 2025, the Ecser distribution center of global home furnishings retailer JYSK will become the seventh country to supply 91 stores in Austria, and from June, online orders will be processed in the neighboring country. More than 11,000 products are stored at the Ecser center (just south of Budapest), and the utilization of the complex has increased by 17% with the addition of the Austrian market, and currently stands at around 80%, the chain told MTI on Wednesday.
The expansion is also significant in terms of employment, with more than 20 new warehouse and office jobs created as the new store has been shuttered.
From spring 2025, JYSK stores in Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia will also receive their goods from Ecser in Austria. The center started operations three years ago and is now not only one of the largest and most modern distribution centers in Europe, but also a key element in the regional logistics of the Scandinavian-rooted supermarket chain.
At its base in Ecser, 388 JYSK employees work in the logistics center, and at least 500 truckloads of goods are dispatched from here every week, as well as more than 270,000 cubic meters of additional products stored here.
The regional center in Ecser was inaugurated in 2022, with two fully automated high-bay warehouses of more than 40 meters in height, and since then work has been ongoing to further modernize operations and increase sustainability.
Since the start, they have placed a strong emphasis on green solutions, from the installation of solar panels and solar collectors to the use of electric forklifts, and have recently expanded their sustainable practices and technological innovations with the introduction of unique robotic cleaning machines.
The global home furnishings chain JYSK's earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) increased by 12% year-on-year to DKK 4.43 billion (EUR 594 million), while sales rose by 7.6% to DKK 41.4 billion (EUR 5.6 billion) in the 2023/24 financial year ended August 31, 2024.
JYSK Hungary opened its first domestic store in Fót (just east of Budapest) in 2005. In the financial year 2023/24, earnings before tax (EBIT) rose by 30.7% to HUF 16.95 billion, while sales increased by 14% to HUF 76.471 billion.
