77% of Hungarians are open to buying second-hand products online, 64% have already bought such products online and 8% are confident that they will do so in the future, according to a recent representative survey by Opinio Institue Ltd., conducted on the occasion of the March 18 World Recycling Day.
In the survey, commissioned by Shoptet, a Czech-based company that creates and operates online shops, 93% of Hungarians said they buy second-hand goods online because of lower prices, 32% because they protect the environment and 22% because they think it is fashionable.
84% of respondents aged 16-19, 83% of those in their twenties, 79% of those in their thirties, 76% of those in their forties and 65% of those in their fifties are receptive to buying second-hand goods.
In terms of product types, 47% buy second-hand fashion items, 43% buy computer equipment, 39% buy books and 34% buy consumer electronics, the survey said.
The survey found that 67% of women have bought second-hand fashion items online and 43% have bought books. 53% of men have bought an online electronic device (phone, laptop, tablet, smart watch, camera or even a camera) and 43% have bought a TV, games console, sound wall or player.
By generation, the 50s are the most environmentally conscious (36%), followed by the 20s at 35%, they said.
The survey polled 1,123 people in March 2023 and is representative of smartphone owners aged 16-59 in Hungary by age, gender, education and place of residence.
