Thanks to its developing relations with the Far East, Hungary plays a prominent role in the relations between China and the EU, according to the Minister of National Economy.
Speaking at the EU-China tourism summit in Budapest on Wednesday evening, minister Márton Nagy was of the view that that during his EU presidency, which began this week, Hungary considers improving the competitiveness of the EU to be the most important task. Within this framework, in addition to increasing the volume of tourism, the competitiveness of tourism must also be encouraged, since the sector plays a prominent role in the economy of the Union, he said. The sector accounts for 9% of the EU's GDP, employs 4.4% of the workforce, and indirectly provides the livelihood of around 25 million people in addition to its nearly 10 million employees.
The minister emphasized that according to the forecasts, the number of Chinese guests arriving in Europe could increase significantly in the coming years. Thanks to the strengthening of Hungarian-Chinese relations, more and more people from the Far Eastern country have been coming to Budapest for years. Chinese tourists spent more than 300,000 guest nights in Hungary last year.
Márton Nagy is confident that thanks to the further development of tourism, 2024 will also be an important year in the relationship between the two countries, and even from the point of view of the EU. He added that Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport, considered the country's gateway, returned to state ownership a few weeks ago, and he was of the opinion that it is a particularly important result from a tourism point of view.
The minister welcomed the fact that, based on the participants' feedback, valuable new contacts were established at the tourism event related to the Hungarian EU presidency. The discussions and meetings will continue on Thursday, and the participants of the international tourism conference will be able to personally experience that Hungary awaits its guests with high-quality services and an outstanding tourist offer.
