The majority of people believe that it is now essential to be able to pay by credit card in shops, markets and at service providers such as plumbers or hairdressers, OTP Mobil said on Tuesday, based on a representative survey conducted by MTI.
The survey, representative of the Hungarian population aged 18 and over, was commissioned by OTP Mobil, the developer of SimplePay payment solutions, and conducted by Pulzus Research System between October 31 and November 5, 2024.
29% of respondents consider it important for merchants to have electronic payment solutions and 62% consider it essential. Only 9% said that being able to pay in cash at the point of sale was enough for them, the survey said.
50% of respondents in the market and 40% in beauty salons and door-to-door salesmen said they lack electronic payment facilities. A smaller proportion also mentioned car repair shops and bakeries, canteens, public transport or public toilets.
The research also highlighted that negative experiences with payment, such as the lack of a terminal or the slowness of the process, have an impact on the perception of the merchant or service provider. 78% of respondents found such an experience upsetting, including 17% who said they would be unlikely to shop there again after a negative experience with payment.
