A NATO radar station has been inaugurated in Medina, southern Hungary, completing the control of Hungarian airspace with the two similar 3D radar towers in Bánkút in the north and Békéscsaba in the southeast. The total cost of the project is HUF 1.05 billion (EUR 3.4 million).
117 tons of
reinforced steel and 1,061 cubic meters of concrete have been built into the new
tower of over 45 meters in height that replaces the Soviet radar technology
installed in 1987. The facility has been made to resist any temperamental
weather.
It is a RAT
31 DL radar-type device, manufactured by the Italian company Selex ES, that
will work in the Medina tower. The firm’s technical experts have already installed
the unit that is expected to operate in the NATO system as of the first quarter
of next year.
The North
Atlantic Alliance that has covers 94% of the costs of the project will also
contribute to the operational costs of the radar tower building for 19 years.
