Preparedness Stays, State of Emergency May Be Lifted

The Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyás, was of the view today that the measures taken to fight the coronavirus in Hungary have been successful, but the situation is still very fragile, so it is important to follow the rules.

“A proposal will be submitted next Tuesday, which begins the process of abolishing the special legal order [for the state of emergency],” the minister said. “However, the necessary measures will stay in force, for example the Operational Group will continue operating,” he added.

“There are countless measures that go beyond the state of emergency legal order which require a law that will be able to maintain them, such as the regulation on the postponement of the deadline for extension of documents,” the minister said.

The official number of infections in Hungary stands at 3,641, while the number of deceased is 473. The number of people who are fully recovered is increasing and now stands at 1,507. The total number of active COVID-19 cases is 1,659, with 510 people currently being treated in a hospital.

According to Chief Medical Officer Cecília Müller, Hungary is in a declining phase of the epidemic, but there are still new cases every day. In the last 24 hours, there have been 16 new infections in Budapest and 10 in Zala County. She emphasized the importance of maintaining epidemiological preparedness to keep the epidemic under control.
