Snow that began to fall Sunday night and continued Monday morning hinders traffic in the Hungarian capital. Roads both in Budapest and Western Hungary are snowy and skiddy, motorists are advised to stay home or use the means of community transport.
Buses are able to serve some routes partially in the Buda hills and a few tram lines were out of service temporarily due to frozen switches in Budapest, where public transport is free on Monday to help people leave their cars at home to alleviate traffic.
Except for a short time during cleaning this morning, one of the landing strips at Budapest Airport is usable and is expected to be so throughout the day. Some flights scheduled to land in Bratislava landed in Budapest on Monday due to the severe snow situation in the Slovak capital.
There have been several accidents on the roads of Hungary, especially in the western part in the intensive snowing. In two counties alone, firefighters were called to help in 25 road accidents early Monday morning. Traffic also slowed down on motorways and railway lines.
