March 1, 2019

People in Hungary will go to the polls to elect their representatives in the European Parliament (21 seats allocated for the country) on Sunday, May 26, 2019, the President of the Republic János Áder announced this Friday.

According to the European Council (made up of the leaders of the EU member states), the elections must be held in each member state between May 23 and 26, while the Hungarian election law says that elections have to be held on Sundays, which left the President with the only choice of May 26.
"The election is a chance for all of our fellow citizens eligible to vote to influence the future of the European Union in the next five years. Hungary is our homeland and Europe is our common home, so I would like to ask all my compatriots eligible to vote to take part in the upcoming European parliamentary elections," the President said in a statement.
