The second cycle of the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), the most comprehensive international survey of adult skills, will start in Hungary on September 1, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) has announced.
The survey will examine the basic competences used in everyday life and work – reading comprehension, elementary reading, numeracy and adaptive problem-solving – of the population aged 16 to 65, and their use in the labor market.
Preparations for the second cycle of the international survey started in 2019, with 32 countries including Hungary.
The national survey will start on September 1, 2022 and is expected to run for four months. In total, more than 9,000 randomly selected residents aged 16 to 65 with a Hungarian address will be invited to participate.
The survey consists of a computerized background questionnaire and tasks measuring skills and competences. Participation in the data collection is voluntary.
Nationwide, nearly 200 enumerators will start work in 250 locations, with all districts of Budapest and smaller municipalities represented in the sample, in addition to large cities.
The PIAAC survey is unique in that, unlike similar surveys carried out in the past, it measures the use of competences in the labor market and in everyday life, and produces internationally comparable data by using a common methodology with strict standards in all participating countries.
his international survey is conducted in over 40 countries/economies and measures the key cognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate in society and for economies to prosper.
PIAAC is an initiative of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The first cycle of the measurement was launched in 2008, with the participation of thirty-eight countries.
Preparations for the second cycle of PIAAC data collection started in 2019 with 33 countries. A pilot survey with a sample of 1,500 participants will be carried out between June and September 2021 to lay the groundwork for the main survey, while the main survey with 5,000 participants will start in autumn 2022 and run until December 2022.
