The Hungarian women's saber fencing team finished seventh at the World Cup event in Budapest and qualified for the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games as the Ukrainians finished eighth.
This is the first time ever for the Hungarian national saber fencing team to win Olympic qualification. The members of the team that achieved this success are Katinka Battai Sugár, Renáta Katona, Liza Pusztai and Anna Márton.
"We are very pleased to have achieved the result that takes us to the Olympics," Gábor Gárdos, the head coach of the women's saber team told the state news agency MTI. He added that the Hungarians felt the pressure of what was at stake.
"The girls fought more tensely, but then when they got into the top eight, which meant being in Tokyo, they relaxed a little and lost the next bout. I told them that this shouldn't be allowed, we should always focus on the next bout. Of course, we're very happy, congratulations to them."
Despite her knee injury at the December national championship, Anna Márton won a gold medal in heroic fencing on Saturday in the individual competition and then in the team competition.
