Gergely Siklósi, competing in the first Olympics of his career, won the silver medal in the men's individual epée event at the Tokyo Games on Sunday.
The 23-year-old world number one and defending world champion lost 15-10 to France's Romain Cannone in the final.
Siklósi fought with freat spirit all day long in Hall B of the Makuhari Events Center, beating China's Tung Chao 15-9, Morocco's Hussam Elkord and defending champion Park Sang Jung of South Korea 15-13, before a confident 15-10 win over Italy's Andrea Santarelli in the semi-finals.
Cannonme, who is much shorter than Siklósi, hit the Hungarian twice quickly, but the world champion equalised with a superb touché to make it 4-4 before the first three minutes were up. Siklósi managed to take the lead in the next set, but as it turned out later, he had the lead for the last time at 6-5. Cannone fought with the composure of an underdog, and fought very well, leaving his rival standing after 10-8 and almost instantly in the gates of the final victory. The last three minutes started from 14-9, but the Frenchman scored the winning touch.
"I was disappointed for two or three seconds, it's not a good feeling to lose, but the tournament itself went well. I am very happy to win the silver medal," Gergely Siklósi said after the medal ceremony.
