ORIGO Film Studios in Budapest has reached a defining milestone in its sustainability roadmap with the official handover of its state-of-the-art solar energy park.
The company says this multi-megawatt installation represents a significant leap toward their net-zero emissions goal, reinforcing Budapest’s position as a premier, eco-conscious hub for global blockbuster productions. By integrating cutting-edge photovoltaic technology consisting of 1,418 solar panels with their existing hybrid energy systems, ORIGO Studios is now able to offer an even lower carbon footprint for its partners without compromising on world-class operational power.
According to a statement released by ORIGO Studios on Wednesday, the newly commissioned energy system, which generates 820 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, provides the studio with partial self-sufficiency. As highlighted, the investment marks the latest milestone in ORIGO Studios’ sustainability strategy, launched more than a decade ago, which fits into a complex green ecosystem.
The investment is a strategic response to the commitment by global market-leading producers – including Netflix, Disney, and Warner Bros. Discovery – to achieve full climate neutrality by 2030. For Hungary, the film industry is a key sector, generating nearly US one billion in revenue for the national economy annually.
The installation of solar panels on the roofs of the complex’s studios not only reduces their carbon footprint by 310 tons annually but also provides a direct competitive advantage to all their filming partners.
"We are not merely following sustainability trends; we are laying the groundwork for Budapest to remain one of the world’s most attractive and modern film production hubs," Mihály Tóth, Head of Marketing at ORIGO Studios, emphasized.
This strategic approach and environmentally conscious operation are also evident in the day-to-day operations at ORIGO Studios. One example of this is that when the studio complex was built, they established their own thermal power plant at the neighboring waste-to-energy facility.
As company director Márta Horváth Fekszi explained, “we receive the heat from the waste incinerated in the plant – which comes to us in the form of hot water – through our own pipes, and we use it to heat the studios.”
Another green feature of the studio complex is that it recycles rainwater and groundwater; in fact, special rainwater storage tanks will be installed on the roofs of the studios in the future. ORIGO Studios is one of the world’s eight most significant film studios. Now, it is officially becoming the world’s first industrial-scale film production base powered by solar energy.
"We don’t follow trends; we set them. When Netflix or Disney set climate goals, we are the ones offering them the physical means to achieve them in Budapest. With this, we have elevated domestic film production to the global forefront," Márta Horváthné Fekszi added.
